This is my third day of playing NBA Live, and so far, everything has been great. The dynasty mode is amazing, and FIBA is a very nice addition. I could tell, after the last two NBA Live games were a bust, this game was going to be a good one. By far this

is the most realistic basketball game I have ever played, and its new Go-To-Move feature is amazing.

NBA Live starts you off in a stadium, with all the lights off, just you and your basketballs. Pick your stadium, and favorite player, and practice away. There isn’t much to this feature, but it is kind of cool if you are bored, to just shoot around with so and so, practice some of the new moves, or look at their hotspots. From there, EA adopted 2k’s quick menu system during the game and main menu, so you can either press start, and look at the variety of options, or you can press a direction on your directional pad and quick select a few options. The layout is rather simple, and the loading times are bad, but with graphics of this caliber, you know why it takes so long to load.

The Graphics in this game are the best of the best. I have not yet seen an NBA game that has graphics of this caliber. For once, NBA games can compete with NHL games some of which have had amazing crisp graphics for a couple of years. Not only have they mastered what each face looks like, but they also made the fans real people, instead of nice fence posts cheering on the fake looking players. The only downside of this, is the very long loading times that can take up to what seems 10 minutes.

Dynasty Mode is one of the reasons why I prefer NBA Live over 2k, though I did prefer 2k7 over Live 07. This year, you can go even more in depth, yet the mode keeps its simplicity. You have control over virtually every aspect of the team; signing & releasing staff and players, trading, and more. The schedule is no longer month by month bases, but leads you buy the week, which I see as a pointless change, making it harder to see your upcoming games. I don’t know what it is about controlling a team and carrying it through its ups and downs, but EA sure does a good job of letting you own your own team.

The gameplay is of course great, but perhaps it is getting a bit to realistic? There are a lot more fastbreaks which is a big plus, but they took out lead passes and that hurt the gameplay a bit. You can no longer pass cross-court and expect your teammate to catch the ball, you must pass it around and then you can expect for the ball to land safely in their hands. Players in the game tend to do a lot more layups then dunks, even when they are monster dunkers which doesn’t make sense. Everything else in the game flows smoothly which attributes to the realism, over all, it has great gameplay, but is on the edge of being to realistic.

Some new cool things include the HotSpot feature, where you press a certain button and you see where the player’s hot spots are in real life. Chances are you will make it more in the red than the blue (red=hot, blue=cold). This isn’t a new thing, more like a new feature removal; superstar moves have been bothering me ever since they introduced them, and they completely took out the realism of the game. Finally EA came back to its senses and just by the removal of it, it makes the game a heck of a lot better. The most dribble moves are a bit different; more realistic. You can do different combinations of these moves including a fake spin move and then drive to the late. Go To Moves, the final new feature is one of the nicest things I have seen. Unlike superstar moves in the last few games, you don’t press a special button, but you go a certain place, and shoot a certain shot. You can drive to the side, stop and do a fadeaway like Kobe, or do Dirk’s backwards floater.

What went wrong? I understand it takes a lot of power to run this game’s graphics, but loading times of 10 minutes are unrealistic. Sometimes I want to play a quick quarter before I go somewhere, but when I have to wait that long, I can’t do anything. There are way to many layups instead of dunks which I have covered earlier, and is a big problem in my eyes because they tend to miss so many layups. Thankfully these are the only major issues I have seen, and hopefully I won’t find any new ones.

I don’t know what it is that EA does, but every year I keep coming back to NBA Live even though the last few have been a disappointment, and this year I am glad I did. NBA Live 08 is a great game, and if you are a basketball fan this is a great game for you.
